Never in the history of mankind has the individual enjoyed similar freedom, prosperity and longevity as in the West. Never before has the individual in general been able to shape, direct and manage his own life and lifestyle, his reality and future. Never before have we owned more things, lived more experiences and been more in touch with the outside world.
Yet, we do not feel at ease with ourselves. Never before so many individuals have lived in psychological distress. Never before have drugs and alcohol been so pervasive. Never before have so many people felt so lonely and disconnected from families, friends and communities.
We continue to believe in a better world and are willing to fight for it. We still want to improve and change our predicament. The difference between us and our ancestors is that we focus on our personal world, our direct environment. Rather than better ways to structure and shape society, we want ideas on how to improve our lives. 21st century ideals are about life. They deal with how to live, grow and participate. These ideals are about us, our lives and our community. (c) Armand Bogaarts |
